This poignant film follows the return of six surviving Navajo Code Talkers to five Pacific island sites—where their unbreakable battlefield terminology, based on the unwritten Navajo language, helped U.S. forces overcome Japanese expansion in the Pacific theater during World War II. Followed by a Q&A with director/producer Dr. George A. Colburn.

Shonda Buchanan’s memoir explores her family’s legacy of being African Americans with American Indian roots and how they dealt with not just society’s ostracization but the consequences of this dual inheritance. Using one family’s history rather than aiming to represent every American’s multiethnic experience, Buchanan documents the physical, spiritual, and emotional displacement of American Indians who married mixed or Black slaves and indentured servants at America’s early crossroads.
