Highland Park has a new bakery, and it’s not just any bakery. This past Friday, La Monarca Bakery officially opened its seventh location in Los Angeles right on Figueroa St. The Mexican bakery is a welcome addition to the once bare Figueroa corridor. It’s a community hungry for more family-friendly food businesses and La Monarca fills that void.

La Monarca Highland ParkLa Monarca founders and family were present, in addition to State Senator Kevin de León who was also there to cut the ribbon marking the official opening. It was a joyous event that brought locals together for a delightful afternoon full of excitement and good food.

La Monarca Highland ParkThe samples flowed while a large mariachi band played celebratory music to the locals and visitors in an event that lasted for two hours. From crackers topped with their mole chicken, to flaky, buttery orejas, bean toast, and even some of their new moist horchata cake slices, everything was a tasty treat offering something new to the neighborhood.

La Monarca Highland ParkIt’s slightly more upscale than your average Mexican bakery. La Monarca focuses on quality ingredients that truly shine in their products. Agave-sweetened treats, along with new variations on old Mexican favorites abound. Items like their cuernitos – a type of croissant filled with their signature fillings like guava with cheese, dulce de leche, or chocolate are plentiful. Other treats like their many concha varieties, cookies, and flans are also crowd pleasers. They also offer savory items for a quick lunch run. Choose from their many torta sandwiches, such as their chicken mole or even a vegetarian chorizo option.

Like any good bakery, they also offer coffee to wash everything down. In addition to the regular java options, you can try their signature Café Oaxaca – an espresso beverage with Mexican chocolate and your choice of steamed milk. They also offer a Café del Carmen – a delectable latte with added dulce de leche.

Be sure to stop by in the morning to pair your coffee with some pan dulce or for an evening treat. La Monarca is open Monday-Saturday 6AM-9PM and Sundays from 7AM-9PM.
