When Frank Romero painted the mural “Going to the Olympics” for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, he was already famous as a founding member of Los Four, the artist collective that put Chicano art on the art-world map. The mural, painted along a wall of the 101 Freeway in downtown L.A. and restored in 2013, was – and remains — one of L.A.’s best known works of public art.

Thirty five years later, the Olympics are coming to L.A. again and Romero is preparing to paint another mural called ‛Going to the Olympics Again.’ This time, the mural will be in Highland Park, on South Ave. 57, on the wall of the public parking lot adjacent to the Ebell Club.

A signed rendering of the new mural was recently unveiled at Compass Real Estate in Highland Park by broker associate Alex Lozano, who spearheaded a fundraiser for the mural in 2018. The event raised $12,000, led by a $2,500 donation from Compass, and the rest from a raffle and silent auction of items by five artists and 40 local businesses.
