Co-LAb Gallery, the delightfully eclectic and boldly colorful gallery-meets-retail-shop crossover concept that brightens up the 5300 block of York Boulevard has spent the past seven years growing a roster of local artists and fostering an artistic community that feels inclusive and supportive. Gallery co-owner Kristin Hector is a painter herself, and thus has a unique vantage point regarding the importance of elevating emerging artists and ensuring that art is accessible and affordable for everyone. Co-LAb’s vibe is quirky, playful, and blissfully unpretentious, and their wide selection of impeccably curated art and art merchandise appeals to all demographics, making it a neighborhood hot spot for gift shoppers and inspiration seekers alike.unnamed-5 (3)They host a variety of community building events, art openings, and educational workshops, including the $100 Show, a semi-annual group exhibition featuring over 250 pieces by almost 50 LA artists, each of which are priced at a relatively affordable $100, and are available for attendees to take home on the spot. Each piece is painted or drawn on an 8×8 piece of wood, and the artists are given complete freedom in terms of themes and colors, which results in a varied selection that beautifully captures the dynamic landscape of contemporary art in LA. The creative energy talent emanating from this massive group exhibit is refreshing and thrilling to witness, whether you’re an artist or a collector.unnamed-6 (3)

After huge successes in the years prior, the $100 Show returns to Co-LAb Gallery this weekend, with an opening party that will feature booze and music Friday May 19th from 7-10 PM. The show runs through Sunday at 6PM, but the famously frenzied exhibition is cash and carry, which means that pieces will be going fast.

The affordable price point and focus on up and coming artists is what makes Co-LAb stand out among other galleries in LA, and this event encapsulates their overall mission:  to build community through art in a way that is accessible to everyone, and give young, talented artists a platform to express themselves. Not to mention you get to indulge in the immediate gratification of falling in love with a piece of art and being able to take it off the wall and home with you that night. Don’t miss out!
